First Stamps used in US Mail

by Cecilia Kleiner 07/02/2021

It's July 1st!

We are half way through 2021. We hope everyone is having a good year.

On July 1st, 1847 the first issue of postage stamps went on sale. The United States Post Office sold two kinds of stamps.

One, priced at five cents, pictured Benjamin Franklin. The other, a ten-cent stamp, pictured George Washington.

Today, a first class stamp is priced at 55 cents.

Stamp collecting is still an interesting hobby. In fact, we have seen many older stamps sell for thousands of dollars.

Whatever your hobby is, we hope you have fun doing it.
