A Boat Run on the Chicago River

by Cecilia Kleiner 05/24/2023

We were at the south end of downtown Chicago today. The bridges came up, and we had to wait for the boat run. It was exciting to see how lights, bells, and crossing gates come down into place. Then minutes later the bridges are cranked high into the air.

These are excellent examples of Chicago's bascule bridges—essentially a moveable bridge that lifts up with the help of a counterweight.

To accommodate sail boats and other tall vessels traveling between the Chicago River and Lake Michigan, Chicago's bridges open approximately 40 times a year from April to November.

These boats travel along the Chicago River to Wolf Point, then will go eastbound towards Navy Pier, and then onto Lake Michigan.
