Duks Red Hots in Chicago

by Cecilia Kleiner 11/17/2023

Located at 636 N. Ashland Ave in the West Town neighborhood is Duks.

Duks opened up in 1954. For the past 69 years it has been serving up hot dogs, hamburgers, chili dogs and more.

Mervyn Dukatt and Donald Marsalle opened the hot dog stand in 1954 as Donald Duks Red Hots.

A couple of years later Walt Disney filed a lawsuit against them because of the name, so the owners shortened the name to Duks Red Hots.

Once there were 12 locations, but today this is the last Duks standing.

We stopped by Duks and met Carol Chavez who manages and runs the place for the past twenty years.

We also learned that the business was sold, and will be closing in a couple of months.

There are not too many of these old hot dog stands left.

If you have any favorite places, let us know of them.
