Portage Theatre

In 1920 the Portage Park Theatre opened at 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Located near six corners in Portage Park, The Portage Theatre is one of the oldest movie houses in Chicago.

The theatre was open for over 80 years, but in 2001 it closed down.

There have been several remodeling projects on the theatre. The theatre re-opened in 2006, and would feature old silent movies, as well as old classical films.

In 2013, the city of Chicago granted the Portage theatre a landmark status.

The theatre changed hands a few times, and closed again in 2018.

The building needs more renovations. In fact, there are several code violations from the city.

The Portage theatre has been placed on the 2024 most endangered historic places in Illinois.

The current owner wants to make the repairs, but needs financial help from the city.

The Portage Theatre is a great movie house, and hopefully can be restored and become an entertainment destination as it once was.
